2017 Fine Arts Educator of the Year is

Mrs. Jessica Alvarez Kiser

The Stanly County Arts Council recognizes a Fine Arts Educator of the Year with the "Jim Kennedy" award, given in loving memory of James D. Kennedy, a long time Fine Arts Educator and supporter of the arts in education.  Mrs. Kiser received a $250 classroom scholarship that the AMS band used to purchased congas.

For the past 5 years, Jessica Kiser has been the band director at Albemarle Middle School in Albemarle. According to Kiser’s principal, Mrs. Beverly Pennington, “True learning takes place when students are inspired to learn the content.  Mrs. Kiser inspires, motivates and encourages young musicians to develop the skills necessary to not only satisfy their present curiosity but, more importantly, develop a passion to extend their musical skills far beyond their middle school years.”    Some of the accomplishments Mrs. Kiser has had at AMS includes offering after school band tutoring, Chorus Club, Pep Band, Bucket Drums, and Brass Ensemble.  Twenty-six percent of AMS students are enrolled in Band.  She also inspires her student to be involved in music beyond the classroom by taking them to community concerts, touring the Music Program at UNC – Greensboro, and playing the Duke Pep Band.  She herself also participates in the Stanly County Concert Band.  She has also won funding opportunities through the Stanly Education Grant twice in her five years of teaching.  She was recently selected as Teacher of the Week and selected by her peers as the New Teacher of the Year.  Lastly, Mrs. Pennington added “ During my 28 years of experience in public education, I have never seen one individual have such a dramatic impact on the arts in a school.”
